Boundaries – You Need Them!
Those of us called into ministry have experienced a call to serve and nurture others. Our ministry of preaching, teaching, and compassion is guided by the respect we have for our congregations and by their having trusted us with their spiritual well-being. When we do not respect their separateness or use their vulnerabilities to satisfy our personal needs, we have violated boundaries and betrayed a sacred trust. Healthy boundaries are a gift. They are helpful guidelines that give shape to our relationships. In ministry situations boundaries clarify who is the congregant and who is the minister in a healthy way that prevents unhealthy relationships and dependencies. Boundaries create safe spaces and help build trust over time.
Our curriculum is a nationally recognized curriculum developed by the FaithTrust Institute. FaithTrust has a long, reputable tradition across culture and faith traditions providing leadership to issues of healthy clergy boundaries, safety, sexual violence to name just a few. The curriculum we will be using is specifically designed to be used by the religious community in helping clergy learn about and live out of healthy boundaries.
