Plymouth Church Study Group of “The 1619 Project”
January 22 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm$10
“The 1619 Project,” a publication of the The New York Times Magazine, marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to Jamestown, Virginia. The series highlights the contributions of black Americans and the many ways the legacy of slavery continues to shape society in the United States. The project includes essays, photos, stories, music and poems that challenge readers to examine their understanding of U.S. history by considering 1619 as the start of this nation’s story.
Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ’s Anti-Racism Committee will host a study group centering around the information revealed in “The 1619 Project.” You do not have to be a member of Plymouth Church to join in the study group, which will meet on Wednesdays, Jan. 22 through Feb. 19, 7-8:30 p.m., and on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m.
Registration costs $10 to cover materials and is required no later than Jan. 6 by emailing: Sheenathomas96@gmail.com. Checks can be made out to and mailed to: Plymouth Church, 4126 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines IA 50312. Please include “1619 Project” in the memo line on your check.
