Staff Spotlight: Nisha Kishor

Nisha Kishor is the Volunteer & Outreach Manager at DMARC. Nisha grew up in Wichita, Kansas and moved to Kentucky in high school. She attended the University of Kentucky where she earned a BA in Political Science and International Studies. After school she taught English in South Korea for one year.

Nisha just moved to Des Moines in August 2020 and is looking forward to meeting new people and getting to know her new home. Outside of work, she enjoys outdoor activities, cooking, and spending time at home with her husband Ashish.

What drew you to DMARC originally, and how has it changed since then?
I was originally drawn to DMARC because of its mission. Having worked at a food pantry in Louisville, KY for the last 3 years, I know the importance of a nonprofit working to fight food insecurity in their community and I was excited to continue to take on this challenge in my new home, Des Moines, IA.

What do you like most about working at DMARC?
What I like most about working at DMARC is the collaborative environment. Everyone has a voice and works together to offer creative feedback and then makes those ideas a reality.

What is your proudest moment at DMARC?
I’m proud to have been able to connect with volunteers in the midst of a pandemic. During this time, I hadn’t met many volunteers in person but I was still able to reach out through other avenues and build a connection of support for DMARC.

What’s a fun fact about yourself that others might not be aware of?
I love to cook and am always trying new recipes. I can cook some pretty great, authentic Korean food.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I don’t have any hidden talents.

Before working at DMARC, what’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had?
I taught English in South Korea for one year. This was right after college, and it was a wonderful experience. I was able to learn a new language, experience a new culture, and eat some amazing food!

Where is your favorite place in the world to be?
I love traveling and exploring new places. I’m still searching for my favorite place but if I had to choose one now it would be Myakka State Park-riding my bike through the park as the sun sets.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be a fashion designer.

If you could use one famous movie line to describe yourself, what would it be?
“To me, you are perfect.”
